| Abstract | This eight-chapter procedural guide outlines a supported work approach for competitive employment training of Mississippi citizens with moderate and severe disabilities. The first chapter defines competitive and supported employment and discusses funding, personnel, program options, and vocational curriculum development and assessment. The second chapter outlines what service providers and families need to know about such employment programs, focusing on vocational choices available, vocational evaluation, influence of severity of disability, influence of income on government benefits, and other factors. The remaining six chapters explain, in sequence, the steps necessary for establishing supported employment services, centering around the activities of the job coach. These chapters cover job development, consumer assessment, job placement, job site training, ongoing assessment and follow-up, and time management for the job coach. An appendix contains several sample record-keeping forms for such tasks as job market screening, employer contact, employer interviews, environmental analysis, job analysis, job/worker compatibility analysis, and progress reporting.
